Guest Blog: Traveling with Disabilities, Think of the Possibilities

I recently attended CTD’s Legislative Policy Briefing. I sat in the room with those advocating for higher wages for caregivers, increased Medicaid funding for community living vs. state homes, revision of guardianship laws, better enforcement and availability of disabled parking. And don’t forget those moms, straight from the suburbs, trying to legalize medical marijuana-- one tiny, tiny step at a time! As I listened to everything these amazing people are doing, I found myself feeling inconsequential.

By being a mom, daughter, cousin and friend to many people with various disabilities, I can understand at least some of their daily struggles. Recently, I decided to take my understanding and combine it with my passion for travel to create my business, Specially Designed Travel. I thought I was doing something great until this briefing caused me to pause and reflect. Is travel a minor issue? Am I insignificant as an advocate for those with special needs? These questions formulated in my mind.

I will readily admit that travel does not elevate itself to the level of importance of the issues brought forward at this briefing, but I firmly believe that what I am doing can make a difference in the lives of people with disabilities.

I suppose getting to be part of the fun in people’s lives makes me pause and wonder how important my work is. Is fun less significant than changes to public policy? Arguably, yes! Does it make me inconsequential? I don’t think so. It is my hope and dream that all persons with disabilities can travel where they want, when they want, and with the dignity and respect they deserve.

While I cannot work magic and make all the struggles that go along with traveling with a disability disappear, I can be a caring advocate for my clients in the travel world. I hope to spread the word of my company’s existence and assist as many individuals and families as possible. Through the Internet, I can reach beyond the borders of Austin and assist individuals throughout Texas.
