CTD40: Happy Birthday from Stephanie Torreno

CTD Celebrates 40 years

2018 is a big year for CTD, in part, because we are turning 40! To celebrate our ruby anniversary, we present the CTD40 blog series, which will collect stories from our friends, colleagues, founders, supporters, and the people we serve about our shared history.

Stephanie Torreno, 2012 Pen 2 Paper winner, 2017 judge

I would like to wish the Coalition for Texans with Disabilities a very happy 40th birthday. CTD is a wonderful organization that continues its work to secure equal access in all aspects of community life for individuals with disabilities.

Pen 2 Paper offers writers with disabilities a great opportunity to showcase our stories and to teach others about experiences we encounter as members of the disabled community. I was delighted to earn 2nd place in the 2012 non-fiction P2P competition. Additionally, I was honored to be a judge in last year’s non-fiction contest and read so many great pieces from such talented writers. Judging these works gave me the chance to learn more about different types of disabilities and realize the universal challenges and feelings we face as disabled people. I found the narratives I judged so powerful that I had great difficulty in determining the best work. Most of life’s difficulties are certainly not as fun!

Keep up the fantastic work, CTD!
