In Memory of R. David Hopson

1950 - 2017

A man turns his head to look up and smile sincerely at the camera.Dave Hopson served CTD board member John Curnutt faithfully for over 39 years as his attendant and friend. They were always together. John would say that his independent and productive life would not have been possible without Dave.

Dave was an active member of the Coalition of Texans with Disabilities and was well informed on disability issues. Dave met many times with his state legislators, Representatives Four Price and Warren Chisum and Senator Kel Seliger. He advocated for community services for people with disabilities and for a fair wage for community attendants.

Dave was an excellent advocate and was an example of Texas values like loyalty, friendship and service to others. Impressed, Sen. Seliger took the unusual step of presenting Dave with an award for his outstanding service.

While John is well known throughout Texas for his leadership in disability issues, it must be said that Dave was equally well known and provided the supports and services for John. Their many achievements are shared ones.

Dave personified the Coalition of Texans with Disabilities, he walked the talk about full inclusion of people with disabilities. I will miss his hearty laugh.
